You’ll often see lipoprotein(a) referred to as Lp(a), pronounced “L-P-little-A.” It is an important genetic factor that increases the risk for both heart disease and stroke. Research tells us that 1 in 5 people in the US have high Lp(a). That's 63 million people. Even though this genetic disorder affects this many people, it is not included on most standard lipid panels. Knowing your Lp(a) levels is essential to understanding your risk factors and making healthy choices.
The mission of the Family Heart Foundation is to save generations of families from heart disease through timely identification and improved care of familial hypercholesterolemia and elevated lipoprotein(a). Through research, advocacy, and education we play a critical role in driving change and empowering families to navigate their own health.
FH is short for Familial Hypercholesterolemia. It is an inherited disorder that leads to aggressive and premature cardiovascular disease. This includes problems like heart attacks, strokes, and even narrowing of our heart valves. For individuals with FH, although diet and lifestyle are important, they are not the cause of high LDL. In FH patients, genetic mutations make the liver incapable of metabolizing (or removing) excess LDL. The result is very high LDL levels which can lead to premature cardiovascular disease (CVD).
When you give to the Family Heart Foundation, you invest in efforts that support individuals and their families throughout their FH and high Lp(a) journey, you raise awareness so that those undiagnosed have a better chance of learning that they have the condition.
